What does a forensic evaluation look like?
When a court system, lawyer, or other retaining party has a question about someone's psychological well-being and how it may influence their legal case, they may request a Judge to order a forensic evaluation. Occasionally, a lawyer or other retaining party may request a forensic evaluation to help guide their decision making on the case.
The court system, lawyer, or other retaining party, is the client, while the person being assessed is typically referred to as the examinee. The evaluative process will vary based on the legal question at hand, but a typical evaluation may include a clinical interview, psychological testing, reviewing records, and interviewing collateral informants. The evaluation is narrowly focused on answering the legal question rather than being helpful or therapeutic in nature. The information collected is used to form an opinion, and a report is typically then sent to the client.
